Harsh winters, rugged topography, and distance from major markets make living in the region a perpetual challenge. It’s largely understood that because of its remoteness, the Adirondacks was the last area mapped in New York. Henry Hudson reached Albany in 1609 but it wasn't until 1865, over 250 years later, when Verplanck Colvin charted the furthest reaches of the mountains.
